Overview

VictoriaMetrics is an open-source, Prometheus-API-compatible time-series database built for high ingestion and query performance with a much smaller resource footprint than Prometheus or InfluxDB. A managed VictoriaMetrics Cloud offering and enterprise tiers add automated operations, multi-tenancy, and anomaly detection on top of the free core.

The problem VictoriaMetrics solves

Teams running Prometheus for infrastructure or Kubernetes monitoring commonly hit a wall as their metric volume and cardinality grow: Prometheus’s RAM usage balloons, queries slow down, and long-term retention becomes expensive or impossible without extra tooling. VictoriaMetrics solves this by acting as a drop-in-compatible, far more resource-efficient time-series backend that speaks the same PromQL/Prometheus API and plugs into the same Grafana dashboards and Alertmanager routing — so teams get their existing monitoring stack back, just able to scale and retain data longer without re-architecting.

Decision context

Use these points to test whether the product fits your operation, not just whether it has a long feature list.

  • Published starting price: Free. Confirm user, usage, and feature limits for the plan you would actually buy.
  • Deployment: cloud, on_premise. Check security, data-residency, and access requirements for every team that will use it.
  • Verified integrations include Grafana, Perses, Graphite, Prometheus, DataDog, InfluxDB. Validate sync direction and plan limits for the connections that matter.
  • This record was last checked on 7/25/2026; pricing and features can change.

How to evaluate VictoriaMetrics

A listing helps create a shortlist; a trial with the team’s real workflow decides whether the tool fits. Use this reading with the structured facts and confirm changes with the vendor.

Workflow fit

The record describes it as a fit for Teams already running Prometheus/Grafana who are hitting cardinality, RAM, or long-retention limits and want a compatible drop-in replacement, Kubernetes-native infrastructure monitoring at scale, Cost-sensitive teams needing long-term metrics retention without proportionally scaling compute/storage spend. Check that this context matches the volume, roles, and processes your team needs it to support.

Pilot questions

  • Can VictoriaMetrics complete the critical workflow without manual work outside the product?
  • Do the recorded connections (Grafana, Perses, Graphite, Prometheus) support the sync direction, permissions, and volume we need?
  • What user, usage, storage, support, or security limits appear after the headline starting price?

Evidence and freshness

This record was checked on 7/25/2026. That date tells you when the record was reviewed, not that the vendor has left its terms unchanged since then.

Best for

  • Teams already running Prometheus/Grafana who are hitting cardinality, RAM, or long-retention limits and want a compatible drop-in replacement
  • Kubernetes-native infrastructure monitoring at scale
  • Cost-sensitive teams needing long-term metrics retention without proportionally scaling compute/storage spend

Not a fit if

  • Teams wanting a full point-and-click UI/APM experience out of the box without pairing it with Grafana
  • Teams needing an all-in-one platform with native incident management or on-call rotation

Why it’s listed

  • Drop-in Prometheus-API-compatible replacement with far lower resource usage
  • ISO 27001-certified vendor with a genuinely free, unlimited open-source core
  • Purpose-built for Kubernetes-native infrastructure monitoring at scale

Features

AI featuresVictoriaMetrics Anomaly Detection (vmanomaly) offers configurable ML anomaly scoring as an enterprise add-on, not a core/free feature.
Alerting & on-callvmalert evaluates rules and routes through Alertmanager to PagerDuty/Opsgenie, but there is no native on-call/paging/rotation system.
Application performance monitoring (APM)A metrics/logs/traces storage backend, not an APM tool with code-level profiling.
CI/CD pipelinesNo dedicated CI/CD pipeline monitoring integration; only a Terraform provider for provisioning Cloud deployments.
Distributed tracingVictoriaTraces offers OTLP ingestion and a Jaeger-compatible query API, though it is newer and less mature than the metrics product.
Incident managementNo incident/postmortem/on-call workflow product; alerts route out to external tools only.
Infrastructure monitoringCore, mature capability for Kubernetes, servers, IoT, and industrial telemetry.
Log managementVictoriaLogs is a GA sibling product for log storage and query, integrated with the same stack.
Public APIDocumented HTTP APIs for read/write across metrics, logs, and traces; Prometheus-API-compatible.
Self-hosting / on-premCore strength — single binary or cluster mode, runs anywhere including bare metal and homelab.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Very high ingestion and query performance with a low resource footprint versus Prometheus/InfluxDB
  • Operationally simple: single binary, drop-in Prometheus-API compatibility
  • Strong cost/storage efficiency via compression
  • Compatible with existing Prometheus/Grafana alerting workflows

Cons

  • Built-in UI/visualization is bare and minimal; most users pair it with Grafana
  • Configuration has a learning curve for teams not already in the Prometheus ecosystem
  • Multi-tenancy, anomaly detection, and automated backups are enterprise-only, not in the free edition
  • Very small public review sample size on G2/TrustRadius/Capterra
