Melio built a following among small businesses by making accounts payable free or nearly free, with an interface that's genuinely easy to set up and a two-way sync to QuickBooks and Xero. But its own review record surfaces real friction: unexplained payment declines and compliance holds, customer support that's slow or hard to reach, and limited role-based access controls for teams that need real approval safeguards. Melio itself says it isn't built for larger companies needing robust access controls or broad multi-currency AP — which is exactly the gap these three fill in different ways.

  • Mercury — best for teams that want banking and bill pay bundled into one account.
  • Airwallex — best for teams paying vendors across multiple currencies.
  • BILL — best for teams that need real multi-level approval controls and audit trails.

1. Mercury — for teams that want banking and bill pay in one account

Mercury addresses a structural issue with Melio: Melio is a bill-pay layer bolted onto whatever bank account a business already has, while Mercury bundles FDIC-insured business banking, corporate cards, bill pay, invoicing, and expense reimbursements into a single free platform. There's no monthly fee, USD wires and ACH are free on every plan, and it syncs to QuickBooks Online, Xero, and NetSuite just as Melio does — but without needing a separate bank relationship underneath it.

The tradeoff is that Mercury isn't a bank itself, and reviewers report account freezes or closures during compliance reviews with limited explanation — a different flavor of the same unpredictability Melio users complain about with payment declines. Mercury also has no cash deposits and is USD-only, so it doesn't solve Melio's international-payment gap, and support is largely email-based rather than a phone line. It's the better fit for a startup that wants one account instead of a bank-plus-Melio combination, not one that needs multi-currency reach. Mercury's 121-review base is notably smaller than Melio's 404, though its 4.5 rating edges out Melio's 4.2.

2. Airwallex — for teams paying vendors in multiple currencies

Airwallex solves the piece of Melio's not_for list that Mercury can't: multi-currency accounts in 20+ currencies with FX pricing close to interbank rates, plus payments, cards, expenses, and bill pay unified in one platform. For a business paying international vendors or contractors, that directly replaces Melio's card-based workaround for non-card-accepting vendors with a more purpose-built cross-border payment rail, and the entry tier is free with no monthly fee.

The cost is reliability of support and, in some reported cases, of the funds themselves — customer support is frequently described as slow or hard to reach with no US phone line, and there are reports of frozen accounts or rejected applications with little explanation, echoing the same unpredictability that shows up in Melio's own review record. Airwallex also doesn't support in-person or POS transactions and isn't suited to high-risk merchant categories. It's the right choice specifically for SMBs and scaleups with real cross-border vendor payments, not a general Melio replacement for domestic-only AP.

3. BILL — for teams that need real approval controls and audit trails

BILL goes directly at the gap Melio names in its own profile: limited role-based access controls and approval safeguards. BILL is built around customizable, multi-level approval workflows with clear audit trails, purpose-built for teams that need more than one person to sign off on a payment before it goes out — plus the same two-way accounting sync (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct) that makes Melio easy to adopt in the first place. It's also a common choice for accounting firms managing AP across several clients, a use case Melio isn't built around.

The tradeoff is price and scope. BILL charges per user per month starting at $49, a meaningfully different cost posture than Melio's free-to-low-cost model, and that adds up fast for larger teams. Support is also reported as slow and hard to reach — so switching doesn't fix that particular Melio complaint — and BILL still isn't a general-ledger replacement any more than Melio is. It's worth the added cost specifically when the missing piece is approval control, not price. BILL's review base of 1,804 dwarfs Melio's 404, giving its 4.4 rating a considerably deeper evidence pool.

Do any of these three fix Melio's slow customer support?

Not reliably. Reviewers describe Airwallex and BILL support as similarly slow or hard to reach, and Mercury leans on email over phone support too — this is a pattern across the category rather than something any single alternative solves cleanly, regardless of which one you pick to close a different gap.

Which alternative is best for a business with no international vendors?

Mercury, since it consolidates banking, cards, and bill pay into one free account without the multi-currency complexity of Airwallex, though it's USD-only and doesn't accept cash deposits. Its 4.5 rating is also the highest of the three alternatives here, even on a comparatively small 121-review sample.

Does BILL replace Melio's low cost entirely?

No — BILL starts at $49 per user per month, a real jump from Melio's free-to-low-cost model, and reviewers say that adds up quickly for larger teams, so it's worth the switch only if approval controls are the actual gap you're trying to close. Its much larger review base (1,804 versus Melio's 404) does suggest that cost is an accepted tradeoff for a wide range of buyers already.

Which one actually replaces Melio for you

If the goal is one account instead of a bank-plus-Melio stack, and everything stays in USD, Mercury consolidates the most for no added cost. If vendor payments regularly cross borders, Airwallex's multi-currency accounts and FX pricing solve a problem Melio was never built for. And if the real issue is that Melio doesn't give anyone enough control over who can approve a payment, BILL's approval workflows and audit trails are worth the per-seat cost that comes with them. None of the three fix Melio's core support-responsiveness complaint outright — that's a category-wide pattern worth weighing against the specific gap each one closes.
